Mqa c/o aptxhd

Post by KriHad » Sun Nov 04, 2018 8:52 am

Can someone please explain (and spare any "what do your ears tell you" comments and/or Roon promotion) how mqa works from a aptxhd capable Bluesound speaker (such as the Pulsemini2i) to a pair of aptxhd headphones (such as Sonywh1000xm3)? Can the Bluesound player fully decode mqa and send it in unchanged quality via bluetooth to a pair of headphones? I guess not.

What if instead a pair of headphones are connected to the headphone out socket on the Bluesound player, and the headphones are marketed as "hiresaudio"? Can the Bluesound player then fully decode mqa and send it in unchanged quality to the headphones? I guess so.

I'm curious as well though I suspect you are right. There's so much hype about improved Bluetooth transmission with aptcHD and Sony's LDAC series of headphones. I'm not sure the technology is there yet though the advertising material certainly claims it is.

If the Bluetooth Headphones are not MQA Certified (and I don't know of any that are), then you will not get full MQA.

As for wired Headphones, yes our headphone Amplifier on Bluesound Players was part of our MQA certification. I hope that answers your question...

Thanks, I believe I do. :)

This would then mean the same as if one uses e.g. a Node via digital out (to a non-mqa dac) vs analog out?

Aptx is a transmission protocol, so the answer is sort of kinda...

The now playing window no longer shows the mqa icon when playing mqa content to bluetooth aptxhd headphones. It now shows the hr icon. Is this to reflect the fact that mqa is no longer transmitted via bluetooth?

PS Any chance to force upgrade the Android app, still on the October version 3.0.1, with no update to be found.

Slightly off topic, I had assumed that:
  • Since D/A conversion over bluetooth occurs in the headphones and
  • Bluesound devices only output MQA over analogue
HR may be possible over bluetooth but not full MQA.

Can anyone correct or inform my assumptions?

Bluesound devices output mqa over digital as well, it's just not fully encoded. That last bit is up to the external dac, hence the option to select mqa certified dac in the player menu.
