If the Vault has the hardware (storage drive)and software installed to copy CDs onto the internal storage, then if you use the unit just for copying and storing the CDs onto the internal storage, does it need to be connected to the internet for this function?

You mean you'd like to rip and store the CDs, but not listen to them on your Vault? Because in order to listen to music you need the Vault to be connected to your network, so that the app can manage it.
But I guess an internet connection is mandatory anyway because when you rip the CD, BluOS will also retrieve the cover art and datas about the album, from the internet!

Many people rip CD's where it is comfortable, and then connect to get the metadata added. Yes if you want to control the content you need to be connected.
